GSM Structure

The mobile phones are so integrated in our lives today. Can you imagine yourself without your mobile for a day? I am honestly the “freak out” type when it comes to the availability through mobile phones . After all, we use the mobile phones for staying able to communicate with others where ever we go, there is no reason for missing on this in this decade. It is more of an obligation in today’s life than a choice to carry mobiles. But how exactly a basic 2G structure works?

The basic working principal of the GSM network can be explained as the following. When there is no incoming or outgoing call, the mobile phone only sends a signal to BTS once in a while to inform that it is in that particular location. When there is an outgoing call BTS receives the system and user’s account will be checked to see if it eligible for making a call. When it is authorized, BTC will communicate with MSC to find out the location of outgoing address. It first checks with its VLR to see if it is in its control zone. If it is, then MSC will establish the connection and the talk between the users will start. If it is not under the same MSC, MSC will ask HLR for the outgoing address’s current location. Once HLR returns the address, the two MSCs will connect to each other for the call and the phone talk will start for the users. This is the basic flow of a GSM network.
